Beginner level studio lighting workshop

This workshop will provide hands on experience (bring your camera), for any photographer wanting to learn the basics of how to use studio lighting, either just for interest or for those intending to do studio photography.

This one day course (9:30 to 17h00) is designed for photographers with little or no previous experience of using studio lights and will provide you with the skills required to get started or for attending more advanced workshops.

The morning session will mainly cover equipment issues and the afternoon will be all about taking images.

Agenda:
  • 1) Studio safety.
  • 2) The difference between tungsten and strobe lights.
  • 3) The strobe monoblock and adjusting the strobe light.
  • 4) Softboxes, umbrellas, spots and more.
  • 5) TEA BREAK
  • 6) Setting up your camera to use manual mode.
  • 7) Triggering strobe lights.
  • 8) Using a light meter to determine the exposure and using the histogram.
  • 9) BREAK FOR A SNACK
  • 10) Taking your first strobe light images.
  • 11) How to reduce shadows and a lot more pictures with various lighting options.
  • 12) TEA BREAK
  • 13) Even more hands on work.
  • 14) Tips on how to get started on a budget will be provided during the course.
What you need to bring with you.
  • 1) A camera (DSLR, SLR (some compacts can also be used)). You can share with a friend if required.
  • 2) A note pad and pen to record notes, tips and camera settings etc.
  • 3) Your camera instructions if you may need them.
  • 4) Ensure you have charged or spare batteries.
  • 5) OPTIONAL: If you have any extra lenses or an external flash bring them with you.
